To Shave or Not to Shave (Your Cat), That is the Question

One of my friends moved a couple of months back and during the course of the move her two long-haired cat's were more than a little stressed. Both of the cats have never been that fond of being brushed so she decided not to add to their stress; she avoided brushing them while they adjusted to their new surroundings.  By the time they relaxed, their fur was so matted that she had to take them to the groomer to get shaved. They looked pretty darn funny but not at all uncomfortable.

A few weeks ago, I popped by for a visit and one of the cat's fur was pretty much back to normal but the other one who is elderly,  her coat has not grown back yet! My friend is nervous that her cat may be permanently shaved! I started to look up cat shaving online to see if this is a common occurance and instead I came across a "shaved cat" blog. Apparently, this is a very controvercial subject. there are some pretty heated comments on this blog - definitely not recommended reading for children.

I do not think my friend was cruel to shave her cats. She is probably the most responsible pet owner I know. I am interested to know what other people think, though. If you shave your cat, or would never shave your cat, let me know. Oh and if you've heard of a cat's fur not going back, please tell me!

I have never heard of a cat not growing back its hair...but I am not sure about the photos...the cats looked a little sad to me without their manes...I think that I would be more amused by the owners that would do such things to them...haha

I had both my cats shaved (one long hair one short hair) four times over the past three years and never had any problems (we were all happier when they were buzzed!) until this last time. The long-haired cat's coat has grown back normally, but the short-haired hasn't! His top coat (the long strands) has grown in, but his undercoat hasn't at all - i can still see the marks from the clippers! Neither of them were shaved to the skin obviously - they were both buzzed to a #1 - like the times before - by a professional (and WONDERFUL) groomer. i have NO IDEA why his fur won't grow! if anyone has any ideas - i'd appreciate them! Thanks!
